The Oregon Legislature is poised to make an investment that will advance the cure for cancer and spark economic growth in our state.
All of us have been touched by the tragedy of cancer. Thanks to the $500 million challenge issued by Phil and Penny Knight, Oregon is poised to play a leading role in the defeat of this disease that has taken the lives of so many of our friends and family members. We must seize that opportunity, and a critical step is for the legislature to approve $200 million in bonding authority for OHSU to build the Knight Institute’s research and clinical facilities. The $1.2 billion total investment will revolutionize cancer treatment globally and significantly increase prevention, education, research and screening initiatives in Oregon, with a particular focus on rural and underserved populations.
This investment is not just good for the health of our local and global community, but it is also a unique economic opportunity for Oregon. Fighting cancer is a team effort which will require the best minds and hands in Oregon, spurring growth not just at OHSU but in Oregon’s bioscience, high tech and construction industries.
The Oregon Business Plan thanks all the Legislators who are stepping up to make this important investment for our state.
